Client/Project Overview:
As part of the Cultural Organizing for Community Change convening hosted by Arts & Democracy and Naturally Occurring Cultural Districts NY (NOCD-NY), point A studio facilitated the “FutureCraft: Collective Imagination for Thriving Neighborhoods” workshop. This immersive two-hour session engaged a diverse group of organizers, artists, media makers, and policy makers in reimagining the future of their neighborhoods and identifying bold actions to realize those visions.
Objectives:
The workshop aimed to help participants:
- Understand futures thinking as a tool for collective visioning and action.
- Unleash transformative possibilities for their neighborhoods 20 years in the future
- Explore the complex interconnections shaping community futures through creative, embodied practices
- Translate collective visions into concrete strategies and next steps

Methodology:
FutureCraft showcased point A studio’s signature approach to participatory futures, masterfully weaving together:
- Futures thinking frameworks that stretch the boundaries of what’s possible
- Carefully crafted participatory exercises that amplify every voice and insight
- Dynamic embodied storytelling practices that make long-term futures viscerally real

Key Activities/Process:
- Introduction to Futures Thinking: Participants were immersed in the world of strategic foresight and introduced to the radical possibilities of “unthought futures.”
- Soundscapes of Tomorrow: In this multi-sensory visioning exercise, participants tuned into the voices, rhythms, and textures of their ideal future neighborhood.
- Journey into the Future: Through evocative guided imagery and reflective journaling, participants transported themselves into a vivid “day in the life” of their community in 2044.
- Neighborhoods as Living Systems: Richly layered dialogues explored neighborhoods as dynamic, interconnected living systems, revealing fresh insights and possibilities.
- Embodied Vision Mosaic: In a captivating final activity, participants became Movers, Soundscapers, and Dream Builders, weaving together an immersive embodied story of the vibrant future they long to inhabit.
- Reflection and Commitments: Participants shared one seed (a single word) that represents what they are planting now, to build their new shared future.

- Inclusion is Non-Negotiable: Visions of equity and belonging took center stage, illuminating the transformative power of truly valuing every voice.
